Not to suggest that “Wind in the Trees” is retro-sounding or looks to the past for its influences, but Ellie Rollins does have one of those voices that seems from an earlier, perhaps purer, musical time. Her crystal tones and country textures are blended here with modern pop accessibility, the result less reminiscent of Taylor Swift’s money-spinning sonic cult but more with the same integrity and authenticity of, say, Dixie Chicks or Carrie Underwood.
Here, things drive along on the chimes and charms of the mandolin, laying out a jaunty and jubilant groove for her exquisite vocals to dance over. A mournful yet melodic fiddle drifts through, offering a touch of pathos, and additional layers of acoustic guitars are there to add sonic weight. The whole thing is the perfect balance between the upbeat and the understated, with every instrument doing exactly what the song needs and nothing more.
As the first single from a forthcoming album of the same name, this does exactly what a lead single must do: make you want to beg, borrow, or, heaven forbid, steal the album when it drops next year.
