The best music is made at collision points. Either at constructive points of divergence where music pulls away from the core, letting all manner of new sounds bubble up from within, or, as here, in subductive ways where one or more sounds are sucked down under the weight of another, all the time melding, merging and making a new sonic presence. ‘Drums Are Beating My Steps’ feels like the sound of a mournful dream-pop array dragging brooding folk into cinematic depths, a slow sonic spiral circling around the edge of a creative sinkhole, a funereal procession into the underworld chorused by disembodied voices and those titular drums counting time.
Dour and dark sounds, perhaps, but the perfect musical backdrop for exploring ideas of insomnia and that state that lies between not being truly awake and being unable to embrace sleep fully, that restless dream state that finds the mind and the body caught between worlds.
Here, Eternal Mourning gives us a soundtrack to that mercurial middle realm, literally a sonic exploration of that place between worlds – the half-light before the dark, the storm before the calm, the rapid eye movement as a flickering sound, that place where time dies and every second is eternal.
Acoustic guitar creeps and the drums ring out a tattoo, shaded sonic and ominous vocals invade our consciousness, and never have we felt so detached from reality and so far from restfulness.
Beautiful, yet alarming and distracting. But that is the whole point.
