Eva - Outlaw Anthem (self-released)

27 August 2025

If ever there was a story that reaffirms notions that are summed up by phrases and adages such as “life’s too short,” “believe in yourself,” “trust your instincts,” “better late than never” and “carpe diem” (which I think has something to do with fish) then it is that of Eva and her debut album, Outlaw Anthem.

Eva always had the songs in her, but it wasn’t until she struck up a friendship with musician and producer David Scott that she realised music-making was something she should have been doing all along. Her best friend, Cheryl Carl, was added to the mix, and the album was born.

Now, I’m not familiar with genres and scenes, so I’m unsure if this falls under New Country, Alt-Country, Traditional Country, or any other label you might choose to apply. What I do know is that it is an album of great songs. And that is all that really matters. Don’t you think?

Just the opener, “Nashville,” lays out the sonic stall, with the perfect blend of classic country sounds and accessible pop polish, an infectious groove, and soaring, sweeping fiddles. “Train Cars” pushes things into more country-rock territory, “Hurt” takes the mournful “I was always too good for him” break-up song and turns it into a sonic celebration, and “I Can’t Remember His Name” sees rock drive, bluesy finesse, and country twang all twirling around in a sonic menage a trois! Saucy!

It’s a great album. It has great songs. It is the sort of music that helps keep the genre relevant, moving with the times, and heading into a productive future. But most of all, it is a testament to doing the things you have always dreamed of doing. Do that and you might find that the thing that you always thought you might be okay at proves to be the very thing that you excel at. And that is certainly the case here.
