Ahead of next year’s six-track EP, EverWill gives us a glimpse of what’s to come, and it is pretty engaging stuff, especially if you like music that leans into the darker and more dynamic. ‘Stay’ has one foot firmly planted in the scale and scope of alt-rock, but what really defines it is how deftly the other dances through adjacent genres to add and adorn it.
‘Stay’ plays brilliantly with the idea of dynamics, floating in on dark, ambient winds and slowly building a robust, riff-ready presence that forms the song’s core before fading out on a dark, stygian musical breeze, ebbing and flowing to create intrigue.
And within this, surprisingly short and effective song (it does a lot in under three minutes), we crest tumultuous sonic waves and are plunged into the troughs that follow them; we encounter stadium-ready anthems and gothic atmospheres; we hear ghosts of classic rock past and are lured into the future by alternative music’s potential.
‘Stay’ feels very much of the here-and-now, yet it will tick boxes with rock fans of all stripes because, while aiming to move the genre forward, it never forgets what made the rock sound so appealing in the first place: groove and grandeur, power and punch, artistry and attitude. It’s got the lot!
