I talk about the dynamics of a song a lot when writing reviews, but not everyone may know exactly what I mean by that – just another pretentious journo using big words to sound clever…okay, I do do that too. I could wax lyrical about the rising and falling of a song to explain how song dynamics work or I could simply suggest you give “Bouquet,” the new one from The Exhales a spin. If, after one listen, you don’t understand the idea of the ebb and flow of dynamics to shape a song, then music is perhaps not for you.
“Bouquet” is glorious in the way that the song moves around. The Exhales excel at sculpting both fine musical contours and robust sonic lines, and their ability to go from the most understated low to sky-searing crescendo, from the intimate to the anthemic, from a whisper to a scream, and make such changes in mere nanoseconds, is some of the most impressive song-crafting I have heard. Ever. And I listen to a lot of music. A lot!
I guess that the one thing that they allow themselves, something that frees their creative hand, is not to be too closely aligned to any one genre. In doing so, the song evolves naturally through an alt-rock opening, a balladic indie verse, stadium-ready anthemics, alt-pop understatement, and even sub-metal intensity before the last note fades into the night.
Genres, who needs them, eh? Certainly not The Exhales.
