For every echo of old-school alternative rock, nu-metal, and grunge sound can be heard weaving through this latest single from Fake Figures, there are at least as many forward-thinking moves found. It is healthy for bands to know where the music they make comes from, but not if you are going to be so enamored by such influences that you get stuck in its slipstream. Thankfully, “Burn the Tyrants” is the sound of a band fixed on where they are heading rather than concerning themselves too much with where they have been.
There is an irony in music that anything that defines itself against what has gone before will eventually find itself also swept away by the fickle winds of fad and fashion. And so, just as alternative rock evolved to take the place of classic rock, it now has had its day. Bands such as Fake Figures are what is rising up to take its place.
“Burn the Tyrants” tells you everything you need to know about where rock music is today. A perfect blend of melody and muscle, it wanders between incendiary salvos and understated lulls, attack and atmosphere, propulsion and poignancy. And while it ventures just enough into more technical forms and metal realms to add a neat blend of power and poise, it always retains sight of what is essential: groove and infectiousness.
Not only is “Burn the Tyrants” a reminder that rock music, like all genres, needs to move with the times, but it also shows us that the genre is in safe hands. Very safe hands indeed!
