Fake Plastic - Don't Go to Work (self-released)

25 February 2026

I may be late writing about this latest release from Fake Plastic, but you can’t blame me when they are sending out songs with titles suggesting that I don’t go to work!

Seriously though, lyrically this seems less a general call to down tools and more a personal, more intimate tale, a more one-on-one conversation, a plea for someone to spend their time more wisely, on love, perhaps, relationships, a reminder that life is short and that there are better things to be spending your time on than the mundanity of the rat race or chosing to be alone.

If Fake Plastic is known for a hard-edged sound, a blend of garage rock grit and stadium anthems, all filtered through a more indie and outsider vibe, to begin with, at least, we find them in more considered sonic territories. The first two-thirds of “Don’t Go to Work” is the sound of the band playing with coiled cascades of guitar and spacious drum beats, as the bass line adds a distant, deep-rooted melody.

And then they go for it, exploding into additional salvos of squalling, raw, raucous guitars that brilliantly balance and contrast the more gentle melodics still running below. It is the sound of the beauty in the chaos, the melodics in the sonic muscle!

“Don’t Go to Work” is Fake Plastic at its most creative, a reminder that they can do big, grand, and punchy, but they also know that they don’t always have to. Sometimes, playing the more understated card is more interesting than going straight for energy and drive. They are also clearly aware that if you are smart enough, you can thread both styles together to create something even more intriguing!
