It is my job as a reviewer to dissect music, to lift the hood on the beast and try to explain how the engine works, to tell you what makes things tick, to even try to describe its sound in mere words. With some bands, that is pretty straightforward; most sound like something that has gone before. And whilst you can put a name to the various sonic strands that Fake Plastic weave through their latest single, “Your Gods Are False,” the overall sound that results is hard to pin down.
Sure, there are classic rock guitar riffs and grunge weight, alternative vibes, and indie grooves, but once they are fitted together, what they create feels new yet comfortable, fresh yet familiar.
Taking a wonderfully slow-burning path from understated indie to epic and anthemic alt-rock, this song seems to unlock new tones and textures every few bars as it moves through its not-quite four-minute sonic odyssey.
“Your Gods Are False” is too progressive to be merely classic rock, too dynamic to be grunge, too controlled to be garage rock, too accessible to be alt-rock, too heavy to be alt-pop, and too adventurous to be indie, though it has all of those sounds running through its DNA.
Whatever it is, it’s fantastic, and as a first taste of their new album, Awake in the Night it does precisely what a lead single should do: make you want to know more!
