Felix Alexander Lybeck - (amatör) (Cudighi Records)

4 March 2026

The pursuit of a singular creative voice often requires an intentional unlearning of professional polish, a return to the raw sincerity suggested by the title of Felix Alexander Lybeck’s latest offering, ‘(amatör).’ Recorded and produced entirely by Lybeck in the Käpylä district of Helsinki between 2023 and 2025, this collection functions as a sprawling, intimate map of identity. While it marks his first foray into the Swedish language, the record communicates primarily through a sophisticated architecture of atmosphere. It is a work that feels deeply embedded in the specific, mossy dampness of a Nordic forest while simultaneously drifting through the isolation of a modern city.

The album opens with the disarming immediacy of “ta med gitarren till platsen, du!! (freestyle),” a track that establishes a commitment to spontaneous expression. There is a perceptible lack of artifice here; the music breathes with the irregular rhythm of a living organism. As the sequence moves into “släpar allting hem” and “du&jaghelavärlden,” Lybeck weaves organic folk elements with a dreamlike melancholy that feels both grounded and unearthly. His ability to navigate the feeling of being in-between, caught between the natural world and the internal landscapes of imagination, is rendered with a quiet, persistent grace.

In the mid-section of the record, “ömsam” and “namnlös#1 (tid+rum)” explore a sense of “Nordic weirdness,” where traditional folk structures are subtly subverted by strange, otherworldly textures. Lybeck serves as the sole architect of these sounds, arranging and producing every layer to reflect a deeply personal exploration of love, substance, and nature. The transition into “—> (förs)vinner” and the pulsing energy of “100m final” demonstrates a remarkable versatility, shifting from minimalist introspection to moments of expansive, cinematic weight.

There is a profound interiority to “tar vi aldrig slut” and “jag är van med oljud,” where the title of the latter (translating to “I am used to noise”) suggests a hard-won peace found within chaos. The music avoids the trappings of indie-pop, opting instead for an idiosyncratic form of sonic storytelling that prioritizes mood over hook. By the time the record reaches “hur det än blir,” the listener is left with a sense of quiet resolution. Lybeck has managed to create a record that honors the amateur’s spirit, not as a lack of skill, but as a devotion to the craft for the sake of the craft itself.

‘(amatör)’ is an intellectually rigorous work that remains accessible through its sheer emotional honesty. It is a document of a musician coming to terms with his own essence, using the tools of the studio to emblazon a memory palace of the Helsinki underground. By embracing the imperfections of the process, Felix Alexander Lybeck has produced a record that feels remarkably alive, a testament to the enduring power of the independent voice in an increasingly programmed world.
