In the modern digital download world, where space is no longer an issue when releasing music , the concept of an album of additional and alternative tracks is becoming something of an anachronism. But back in the days of physical products – vinyl, cassettes, and, to a lesser degree, CDs – with only a certain amount of space available to the artist, a further release of extras was commonplace.
So, as Fernando’s Eyes drops this album of Bonus Tracks & Remixes from the Center of Your World recording sessions, it feels, in part at least, a nod to a more innocent and exciting age, one where you would still experience the thrill and anticipation of waiting for such an album to follow up the original.
Such albums have always been aimed at the devoted fan, the collector, the completist, but that was always the fun of the game anyway. What we find here is a collection of b-sides, remixes, and a cover of the White Lies “Change” which proves to be a reasonably faithful rendition, as lush and anthemic as the original with just a hint of Fernando Honorato’s noirish vibe.
The Foreign Resort Remix of “Crystal” turns it into an upbeat darkwave dance groover, the White Birches Remix of “A Million Times” adds a blend of chill and pulsing beats, and then a lush, spiraling psychedelic haze in the hands of Magic Wands.
I love remixes. By allowing others to keep pushing the songs according to their own imaginations and mindsets, they continue to have new lives and greater sonic adventures. It’s a reminder that a song’s story is never truly over, not if the artist is smart enough to put his work in the hands of fellow creatives.
