It is clear from their latest single that Fishbone isn’t a band to sit on the fence. With their latest, “Racist Piece of Shit,” to give it the full title, they say what they mean and mean what they say, but then again, they come from an era when the musical was more politically charged and unapologetic in its opinions and, thankfully, although they have moved with the times, their candid lyrics are a breath of fresh air in a world where everyone seems to be far too willing to keep the peace.
Timed perfectly on the eve of the election, they turn their vitriol and venom on one of the candidates—anyone paying attention will work out which it is—and fire an uncompromising broadside in direct and unambiguous language at his…err, I mean them and their minions.
This they drive home via their trademark punky-funky-metal-ska sound, a groovesome broadside of unswerving and out-spoken sentiment put to the most infectious, upbeat, and energetic sonic swathe imaginable.
“RxPxOxS,” as they title the song, so as not to upset the fragile nature of the far right (yes, they like to act tough but, well…you know) is the sound of a band, a sound, a scene, a movement even casting its sonic vote in no uncertain terms.
