Frank Gappa - Move the Needle (Slow Dance Records)

9 April 2026

I’ve always loved music made in that certain sweetspot, the one where the growl and groove of rock and roll washes up on more pop-accessible, commercially aware shores. It’s a timeless place, one that those clever enough to find their way there have been making music that is both artful and infectious since the dawn of the popular music age. From 60’s garage bands to 70’s glamsters, 80’s post-punk pioneers to the instigators of the 90’s guitar renaissance, and on into the indie-rockers of the 21st century, it is a formula that always wins.

This first release since a change in life and location proves that Gappa hasn’t lost any of the sonic smarts that he displayed on 2024’s Let Me Show You My Jean Jacket; in fact, this builds perfectly in his quest to blend the fresh with the familiar, rock tradition, and forward-thinking experimentation.

The hooks are big, the choruses sing-along-ably addictive, and it is at turns sax-soaked, brilliantly bold, and artfully understated. Dynamic ebb and flow is the name of the game.

And anyone who can simultaneously sound like the biggest hit of the summer of ’78 whilst feeling like it is hurtling headlong into a rock ‘n’ roll revival…not rock, rock ‘n’ roll, a very different swinging, swaggering, seductive beast… is everything that we need right now.
