Although franxie uses sparing sonic brushstrokes and spacious musical lines to paint her songs onto the empty canvas of creativity, the results are undeniably impactful. And this is undoubtedly the case with her latest, “Nobody’s Home,” a song that feels like a delicate watercolor in a gallery of garish oil paintings.
Armed with just a blend of picked and strummed guitars and innovative vocal treatments, it is a testament to her songwriting and her understanding of the less is more principle (provided, of course, it is just the right sort of less) that makes this song speak volumes, punch above its weight, beguile the listener.
And, as deftly done as the guitarwork is, it is, for the most part, Franxie’s vocals that hold you in their spell, the perfect blend of folk-finesse and pop infectiousness, dream-laced haze and, eventually, some wonderful cross-voice, choral creations, for such a modern, indie-folk ballad.
Exploring thoughts of emotional withdrawal from the grand scheme of things, of dislocation, disenfranchisement, and dissociation, “Nobody’s Home’s” themes are increasingly relevant today, as an increasing number of people, especially younger people, are retreating from society, feeling anxious and fearful of the type of world we are ushering in.
If you want to know where modern folk music is today, then this song, and franxie in general, are an excellent signpost for the progressive direction of travel for the genre.
