“Over There” is a song after my own heart, an anthem for those who prefer solitude over drama, who will always choose their own company rather than be sucked into the sturm und drang of other people’s pointlessly chaotic lives. Chaos, I might add, that is mainly the consequence of their own actions. No, I’m with Freya Magee on this, sometimes putting yourself out there and being socialable isn’t worth the price you have to pay. (Hey, why do you think I sit at home and write about music all day, music that arrives either via my inbox or the postman!)
There is still the echo of that chiming, dreaminess that marked out Freya’s earlier work, but here it is definitely an unswerving declaration of independence that is being laid down. The guitars build as the song progresses, eventually pushing it further into more robust realms, though the pop contagion set down at the start is never sacrificed as it solidifies into a more indie-infused drive.
Freya Magee might not always play well with others, but this single plays out perfectly, like the most gorgeous yet poignant and poised and near-perfect piece of indie pop you will have heard in a long time.
