When I saw the last line on the band’s blurb, “We don’t sound like anyone else,” I must confess, I thought, “I’ll be the judge of that. I’ve been doing this a long time, you know.” And after all, how much is there that is new? I mean, genuinely new. I vowed that if they were actually as unique as they claimed, then I would eat my hat.
One hat later, I’m pleased to report that Gamma Rage is one of the strangest and most startling new bands I have heard in a long time. While the music has recognizable musical building blocks within, it is certainly unique enough to put me in the position of needing a new hat. (Note: if you find yourself in such a position, season well and consume quickly!)
If the opening track, “Gloom,” has elements of Jefferson Airplane about it, it is the sound of that band merging their heavy psychedelic trip with no-nonsense, grunge raucousness. Similarly, “Crash N Burn” is punk-pop that learned its chops by listening to old Stooges records, “Scp 3000” is the sound of seventies hard rock being consumed by squalling, 21st-century metalcore machinations, and “Wake Me” is a journey down a gothic rabbit hole into the stygian dark.
If you like the idea of a vaguely recognizable sound that feels almost like an anagram of the music you love. Or of two songs playing at once yet still finding a harmonic sweet spot. Or of all your favorite songs from the heavy end of your record collection being put in a blender and turned into a sonic smooth. Or just fancy something that is a fundamental change yet still appeals to your comfort zones, something fresh yet familiar…Gamma Rage is for you.
