I shouldn’t be surprised when George Collins drops something like this reggae-vibes roots-pop piece; he seems able to wander into all manner of adjacent spaces and neighboring genres at will. Sure, singer-songwriter is probably what it says on his passport, but he essentially wanders far and wide across the musical landscape to flavor his songs. The one thing you learn about him is that with any release, you should expect the unexpected.
Accessibility is always the name of the game with his music and never more so than with this current single “My Island Life,” which, as the title suggests, describes the simple pleasures of taking a break from it all, surrounded by the Caribbean horizons, the azure ocean, the warm sand, the food, the drinks, the people…the space! And, the broader message is that we should all make time for ourselves, slow down, smell the coffee, and take in the beauty of the world. His island life is both real and metaphorical, the message both personal and universal.
Skanking rhythms and island beats create the groove; trilling flutes flit through; heavenly harmonies join this gentle throng as he waxes lyrical about this idyll. And when it is time to go, at least more memories have been made, more good times have been had, and more reasons to return have been established.
