It’s always great when people whose music you have been a fan of in the past return with new projects. One of the highlights of my year used to be Middlenamekill alt-rocking into town to make a splendid racket, but not forgetting TriAmi’s folky-dream-poppery, which was always a lovely experience. Now, Sturge and Sadie respectively are back with Get Good and the rather brilliant first single “Vellichor.”
Coming from a not-quite-so-abrasive alt-rock place as Middlenamekill, the single is a gorgeous blend of dynamics, certainly built on big guitars and spiralling crescendos, but perhaps more polished, though maybe I’m just comparing memories of raw, raucous gigs with this slicker studio sound.
Either way, this debut single is the business, a blend of fire and finesse, power and poignancy. It is also a celebration of trust and togetherness, a reminder that it is our differences as much as our commonality that bring us together, as long as we are prepared to trust each other. Viva Le Difference, and all that sort of thing, but also, long live acceptance, empathy, and understanding; that is where life’s real treasure is found.
So, if a single’s job is to be a mission statement, a calling card, to test the water and to tease the audience, then I would suggest that “Vellichor” is due a hefty pay rise.
