Goddamn Wolves - Get Your Coat (self-released)

20 February 2025

Over the recent Goddamn Wolves singles that I have written about, I have warmed to their ability to weld country grooves onto rock energies, to take the best of both those worlds – the rootsy sound reining in their more hard bombastic urges and that, in turn, adding much-needed energy to the blend. It has always been about striking the perfect balance, and they always have.

“Get Your Coat” leans further into their country/alt-country/Americana…call it what you will, vibe, and I have to say, as much as I have loved what has gone before, this is where they get the balance perfect. It still rocks and rolls and moves along at an infectious pace, but the additional space allows it to swing and sweep; it exposes the brilliant rhythmic mechanics at work, something that often gets buried in their desire to rock out like a bastard.

I’m not saying there is anything wrong with that, but “Get Your Coat” shows that they have much more to offer than just foot-on-the-monitor, fist-in-the-air rock and roll.

Taken from their The Doom EP, a collection of songs written in the face of the wave of uncertainty, perhaps even dread, that is facing not just America but the world in general, this is a song from a more optimistic place, a place where you might be bracing for impact, but you can still make the most of the calm before the storm and spend quality time with your cherished and significant other. The clock is ticking down, but there is still time to dance and love and enjoy life in the face of adversity…for now.

Pianos chime and charm, guitars do banjo impressions (or possibly vice versa), lilting and lovely, and the old sonic partnership of roots and rock reigns supreme.

As I said, I have always loved the sound that Goddamn Wolves make, but for me, this is the high point….so far!
