You have to admire Goddamn Wolves’ ability to wander widely across a variety of sounds and styles without going so far out that they lose sight of their core sonic values. Although known for a rough-edged, tough-sounding, Americana-infused indie-rock sound (or perhaps an indie-rock-infused Americana one), ‘Rule of Three’ proves that within their chosen sphere there is room for something more decidedly delicate. (At least that is how it seems as the song kicks off.)
‘Rule of Three’ begins in an almost balladic 50s pop vibe, although the smart and shimmering guitar lines tell you immediately that it isn’t as simple as that, an early indication that this isn’t going to go where you expect…and that is always exciting. By the time the chorus kicks in, things are decidedly more contemporary, driven, and alt-rock raw, and from here, it seems, every time the song hits a change, everything steps up a gear. Right, I’ve got the measure of the song.
Except I haven’t, as Goddamn Wolves throw a brilliant curveball, change the pace, take two steps to the left, change lanes, and head off down a musical tangent, one that takes the form of an indie odyssey that runs from clean-limbed, jangle-poppery to blistering and riotous alt-rock. And then…we are done.
All that is left to do is roll back, relax, light a post-sonic cigarette, and bask in the afterglow whilst you wait for your heart rate to return to a more normal pace.
