Lately, I have had quite a few songs come my way that seem to be a reflection of, and response to, the state of the world today. As the dark clouds gather on the horizon, as political machinations seem to push us into a more entrenched and less harmonious state, many songwriters have responded by reminding us that understanding, empathy, and love for one another are key weapons.
So if Goddamn Wolves latest single, “We’re Doomed,” seems a bleak response to the situation (from an equally starkly titled Doom EP), then I’m here to tell you that this is not the case. They cleverly remind us that it is only when we give in to such a situation, if we stop striving to move forward, if we accept our uncertain fate, that we are doomed! See, it is a lot more positive and purposeful than the title suggests and a suitable sentiment for every occasion, from a troubled relationship to being faced with a global catastrophe.
This message they deliver via a Pixie-esque (I know that is an overused, go-to reference, but in this case, it is the perfect one) blend of big guitars and post-punk melody, raw, abrasive sonics, and dynamic deliveries. It’s the art of the on/off, the loud/quiet mechanic at work. Opposites do attract, and then some. And despite its grit and grind, “We’re Doomed” has enough groove and gravitas to keep things infectious and accessible. It’s like taking the perfect pop song and covering it in broken glass and iron filings. And I mean that in the very best of ways.
