It comes as no surprise to find that in a previous life, GrayBeat was a jazz fusion drummer; evidence of this interest in exploring beat patterns and percussive energies is found throughout Special Characters. Similarly, the fact that this collection of mainly instrumental remixes and reimaginings wanders all manner of dance-infused directions and explores eclectic electronic avenues, pushes existing sonic envelopes and beats new paths through the musical unknown, is also noteworthy.
If songs such as “Star Gram” see him exploring clubland grooves, or more particularly, the potential future of that sound, then for the remix of “Diamond Mic” he his joined by Hookdiggy for some smooth, rap-infused vocals to break apart and rebuild urban music into new yet slightly familiar musical forms.
“Levitron” is minimalist and beautifully sonorous, with deep, effected vocals contrasting the light and lilting riffs, the watery brass sounds, and liquid sonics that run along the top of the song. “Baby Blues” is an intoxicating and exploratory balance of the structured and the sonically surreal.
And what’s in a name? Everything! Special Characters is so named for the people who have guided, contributed, and helped this album come together, not least Hookdiggy and Wayne Sayres, who can be found adding their musical touch to the tracks, and also for the difficulties that had to be overcome in making such mellifluous and mesmerizing music.
Special indeed!
