Green Seagull - Smoke And Mirrors (Spinout Nuggets)

5 April 2026

‘Smoke And Mirrors’ by Green Seagull is a luminous excursion into baroque psych-pop, a record that combines 1960s melodic sensibilities with a contemporary sharpness and self-assurance. From the first seconds of “Millions Of People,” the quartet establishes a world rich in layered harmonies and chiming guitars. Paul Nelson and Paul Milne’s intertwining guitar lines weave together a polished jangle and chamber-pop intricacy, while the rhythm section of Elian Dalmasso and Sarah Gonputh’s keyboards provides a buoyant yet grounded foundation.

“Walking” extends this interplay, with swirling organ textures underpinning a melody that feels at once familiar and slightly off-kilter. The subtle dissonances in the chord progressions keep the listener alert, as the band balances elegance and adventurousness with seamless ease. On “Mr Trouble,” the vocals carry a playful defiance, the harmonies dancing around one another with a precision that makes the song feel both immediate and timeless.

Perhaps the album’s most evocative moments appear in “(They’re Coming For You) Barbara” and “Paradise Way,” where the baroque instrumentation of lush keyboards, chiming 12-string guitar, and intricate percussive patterns creates a cinematic sense of space. “Where To Find Me” and “Creature Of Habit” exemplify the band’s ability to craft concise, yet resonant pop songs, where melodic hooks are reinforced by counter-melodies and instrumental flourishes that reward repeated listening.

“Game To Play” and “Lightning Girl” demonstrate a sly wit, pairing brisk tempos with layered vocal textures, while “Dark Moon” takes a slightly more contemplative turn, the organ and guitars blending to form a softly swirling backdrop that underscores the album’s emotional range. The closing track, “Proud Man,” stretches past the four-minute mark, allowing Green Seagull to indulge in extended harmonic exploration, showcasing their command of mood and texture without ever losing the pop sensibility that defines the record.

Across ‘Smoke And Mirrors,’ Green Seagull exhibits a masterful grasp of baroque psych-pop’s possibilities. Nelson and Milne’s guitars, Gonputh’s atmospheric keyboards, and Dalmasso’s responsive drumming create a sound that is both intricate and inviting. The record captures the playful elegance of 1960s chamber-pop while maintaining a contemporary vitality, demonstrating the band’s ability to honor tradition while expanding its scope. Each song is meticulously crafted, yet the album breathes as a cohesive whole, offering listeners a richly rewarding experience of melody, harmony, and subtle experimentation.
