The GU-RU is back…hurrah… and ‘Time Blindness’ is a real winner of a tune…hurrah again. If you are looking for a bit of an escape from all of today’s indie chancers still following the Arctic Monkeys template or pop wannabes who bring little new (except perhaps tasteless ambition) to the table, the GU-RU has the answer. That is, after all, what GU-Ru’s do.
‘Time Blindness’ gently shimmers into modern consciousness from a time and place where proggy complexities and free jazz abandon psychedelic warmth and sonic avant-garde gardening, all washed up on each other’s shores. A niche place perhaps but a nice place, nonetheless. Although the title refers to the feeling of becoming untethered from the flow of time due to ADHD, it also suits a song that seems to happily and hip-ly hop across genres, sounds, styles, and perhaps even chronologies.
In just three and a half minutes, we get rising keyboard swells and swirly synth riffs, shuffly-shifty dance beats as an engine room, and an upwardly spiralling chord progression before the song decides to explore a different, slightly tangential but not unrelated path. Watching the song develop is like watching the evolution of a Mandelbrot Set as it reaches out into, in this case, sonic pastures new.
Layer upon layer of keyboard textures pile up; Bachian grandeur sits beside soul riffs; proggy architecture supports swelling and swirling Hammonds; grooves move with paisley-patterned grace; rock edge balances more funky and experimental energies; art and artistry and avant-gardery all bop till they drop.
And you will too. So, for the third and final time, Hurrah!
