I must admit that, before hearing the track, the song title did raise a few concerns. The number of pagan rock bands and wicca-obsessed goths who have sent me music with similar names over the years and the resulting, over-done, over-angsty, over-blown _Buffy The Vampire Slayer- obsessed music certainly gave me pause for thought.
But, dropping the needle on the virtual record revealed a much more satisfying sonic experience, and although at nearly seven minutes, there would be room to create something overblown and pompous, what Guild Theory has done is craft a piece that runs through several sonic seasons, ebbs and flows with dynamic creativity and which is gently progressive without succumbing to everything such a term implies.
More akin to the likes of Editors or Interpol than the more gothic nature of the title, “Vampiric Desires” is a masterpiece of soundscaping, ranging from understated piano-led interludes to big, alt-rock crescendos and drifting from understatement to incendiary sonics.
The theme of obsession, lust, and sanguineous addiction puts the song at the heart of the duo’s EP of the same name, from where its themes and influence have seeped into the rest of the music found there. So if “Vampiric Desire” sounds like your cup of tea, or perhaps a wine glass full of the red stuff, you know where you can find more of the same…and you know that you want more, don’t you?
