The modern world is obsessed with beauty, that ability to appear and remain young, a false mask we wear when we show ourselves to the world. But it is not a new obsession. The ancient Greeks were as obsessed with physical beauty as characters of Victorian literature such as Dorian Gray, from whose tragic tale this song takes its inspiration.
Most of us don’t have a portrait in our attic doing our aging for us, but most people overly concerned with their own image and how the world might perceive them probably have a wide array of beautifying products, drawers of make-up, well-doctored photo shoots, and all manner of filters and effects to perfect and enhance their online image. Whatever happened to “Warts and All?”
Taking some dark gothic vibes and alt-rock intensity, a staccato riff, and an air of menace, Hana Piranha leads her sonic acolytes through a dark dance (and in the video, literally) a raw and raucous reminder of the price of beauty and how our obsession with it can prove destructive.
When taken together with the video, it’s got it all – groove and grind, melody and muscle, mood and message, a blend of pure entertainment and also with something important to say, music that is powerful on its own but with the added visuals of the video is poignant too, and increasingly so in this increasingly image-conscious age.
