As the world speeds up, our lives get busier, the planet gets hotter, society gets angrier, and everyone and everything seems to be running headlong into…well, who knows what…Harry Kappen is a welcome voice of reason amongst the madness of it all. And his message is simple, merely a plea to cease and desist, to slow down, calm down…to “Cool Down”.
He doesn’t offer any grand solutions or proffer any big ideas; he merely reminds us that the forward momentum of modern life is out of control, perhaps pushing us headlong toward our own demise. It is up to us to do what we can to put the brakes on.
After the more balladic strains of “One Life,” “Cool Down” flicks the switch, coming on like an excellent blend of old-school rock and roll grooves and pop-infused, accessible sonic moves, it runs on an “up and at ‘em” vibe, meeting the listener halfway. It is full of energy and enthusiasm, beat and buoyancy.
But for such an infectious and accessible song, its message is powerful and poignant. Slow down, man! Not only is the current pace of our personal trajectories leading to all sorts of unrest and unhealthy states of mind, but our collective forward thrust is killing the planet, all in the name of greed and power.
It’s time to take stock, rethink our approach, and Cool Down. Before it’s too late.
