Given that last year’s Time Will Tell showed us that Harry Kappen was not someone to be easily tagged or labeled in terms of genres and the music that he makes, you have to approach every new release with a totally open mind. then again, should you do that anyway? And, as he prepares to release his next album, Four, “Courage” not only speaks volumes about his creative spirit and gives us an insight into how he views the world, but it takes us down a wonderfully mellifluous sonic path, too.
As he readies himself for an exciting new adventure, one in which sees him leaving Europe to start a new life with his Mexican wife, his aptly titled new single reminds us that courage can be defined as grace under pressure and the ability to tackle new challenges with sensitivity and dignity.
Threading jazz eclecticism and Latin grooves through smart pop sounds, “Courage” is a light and luscious song but one that uses infectious rhythms and shuffling percussion to drive the song eloquently forward.
It is the perfect signpost for what is to follow: a single that is themed around ideas of bravery and change, adventure and commitment, and one that expands his already broad sonic palette.
A soundtrack for leaps of faith? A reminder that with the right person by our side, we can do anything? A funky and finessed piece of funky neo-jazz? It’s all that and more.
