heavy on the heart. - Pretty Pills (Riffsville Records)

14 August 2025

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. When it gives you feelings of self-destruction and draws you towards thoughts of substance dependence, pills and potions, then you make blistering and brutal and beautiful, kick-ass, alt-rock songs. Don’t you? Well, heavy on the heart. does, at least.

“Pretty Pills” is a song that reminds us that the division between classic rock and its alternative offspring is not so wide. It might coat itself in a dark, mid-paced, alternative, emo-infused sheen but when you listen to what it is built from – raw guitars that run between the clipped and the intense, beats that are spacious and propulsive, basslines building bridges between beat and melody – you realise that it’s all rock and roll, at the end of the day. Although it is fair to say that they do walk a fine line between the fresh and the familiar, the nostalgic and the new, whilst they are about it.

The one thing that the song does so well, that most rock music doesn’t, though, is embrace the pain, I mean openly embrace it; if you are going to write a song about addiction and dependence, about dark emotions and the chemical grip, then you have to sound like you mean it. In that respect, *Nikki Wilmes *‘s blend of confident and yet confessional vocals is the perfect icing on the cake.
