If previously I have encountered Heddy Edwards in a more dreamy and pop-infused soundscape, “Dreamcast” finds her exploring new ground. I’m not saying that you can’t still find hints, well, more than mere hints, of her previous sounds, but with this latest single, she pushes out into a slightly more rock-informed realm. Albeit one still textured and tempered by her astute and infectious pop chops.
It’s the best of both worlds, really. On the one hand, we find a song driven by swathes of big, if distant, guitar, but it is what she builds on top of those bold strokes and big beats that make “Dreamcast” stand apart from the pack. Other jangling six-string cascades soften the edges, hazy harmonies float through, synths shimmer and shine, and the beat seems to sit somewhere between the rock arena and the dancefloor.
The result is a song that is big and danceable, especially as it goes pure clubland for the outro, dynamic and melodic, accessible yet artfully layered.
This is the sound of pop getting clever, or rock getting more accessible. It isn’t dance music as such, not in terms of how the genre’s purists would define it, but given how brilliantly infectious it is, perhaps everything that dance music should inspire to be! And, given such a, perhaps, controversial statement, I’ll leave it there!
