Sassy, that’s the word that springs to mind as “Something Nothing’s” sonic charms pick you up and breeze you along. But “sassy” is a bit of a throwaway and inadequate word for what is really going on here. It might describe the feeling of liberation that oozes from the song, but its easy ways and effortless infectiousness are actually built on something far more sophisticated than that.
Pop this may be, but it is sonically articulate, a rare thing in that genre, especially in these days of lowest common denominator, short-lived, zeitgeist-driven, digital dross. Running on a shuffling, sure-footed groove, a closer listen reveals it to be woven from chiming, harpsichord-like pianos, neat guitar licks, shimmering synths, and sugar-rush sonics. It ebbs and flows almost imperceptibly between energetic pushes and lulling interludes, musical tides that create a brilliant dynamic. The feeling of freedom is not only palpable but also effervescently infectious.
Pop may have, in recent times, lost its bite, but here is a song that will nibble and gnaw away at your consciousness until you find that its merry melodies and hazy harmonies have taken up residence in your brain, your heart, perhaps even your very soul.
Who knew that pop could be this great? Well, Heron for a start, not to mention those who listen to Heron. And now you do too!
