Hippy - Tupilaq (self-released)

3 March 2025

It would be easy to point to and pick out an element of Britpop running through the exotically named “Tupilaq,” the new one from Hippy. But you could just as easily point to threads of that late-eighties baggy sound, the post-punk’s formative indie creations, all manner of 60’s psychedelia, not to mention that echoes of that Paisley Underground scene that sought to celebrate it a decade and a half later.

What I’m saying is that Hippy might be making their music by taking strands from the past, but then who isn’t? And, anyway, if you blend so many different and disparate sounds, you can make something identifiably new and most definitely your own. After all, no one was berating the 17th-century Dutch masters for using the same colors in their paintings as everyone else; they merely reveled in the beauty they created from it. Which is all you need to do here.

Hippy claims to be giving us an alternative for a musical world fallen into mediocrity and blandness. And that would sound a bit arrogant coming from some bands, except for two important points. Firstly, they are right about the state of the pop and rock scene today. Secondly, they have the music to back it up, music that could easily be seen as the antidote for a world of skinny-jeaned troubadours and mumble rappers, pop pap, and cliched rock.

Might they be the saviors of modern music? You never know.
