You could say that the sort of sound that Hot Work Permit makes on their debut single, “Go Sign”, doesn’t exactly follow current fad or fashion (which can only be a good thing). But that is only because such raw, bluesy rock and roll sonics long since transcended such concerns. Forged from a sound that found its perfect form a long time ago, such ideas of following later zeitgeists are certainly not going to be entertained. It just doesn’t need to play such games. It knows perfectly well what it is about.
And even if there are new grooves and contemporary moves found here, the spirit and growl of the likes of Bad Company, the smarts of the all too often overlooked Robin Trower and The Groundhogs’ signature Brit-blues brilliance, can clearly be heard drifting through it. Old reference points, I’ll grant you, but that’s how long ago this blues-infused, hard-driving, spacious and infectious sound found its “if it ain’t broke…” moment.
Okay, enough nods to the past. “Go Sign” might sound familiar — classic, even— but it is fresh too. It is the sound of the torch being handed on, of new takes on established sound, of the past being kept alive through modern reinvention.
But more than that, it’s a great song – it swings, it grooves, it swaggers, it is full of attitude and anthemics, muscle and melody, it is infectious and incendiary and intense. What more could you ask for?
