This second single from their debut album, One Way Ticket to Midnight, sees Mainland Break doing what they do so well: blending deft indie cool and rock and roll drive with jangling pop accessibility. “I Give In” is a song that makes them feel like the natural successor to bands such as Sunny Day Real Estate and then, in turn, echoes earlier icons such as Big Star, a band whose shimmering guitars owe a debt of gratitude to the likes of The Byrds. So, although they sound like the here and now, and they do, you can definitely see where they are coming from. (And everyone has to come from somewhere, right? And there are certainly worse places to call home!)
But, it is where they are going that is a much more interesting prospect. Their blend of hypnotic six-string riffs and infectious beats, their ability to move seamlessly between rock and indie sounds through the layering on and off of sonic weight, their contagious musical spirit, and their lyrical smarts are the sound of a band striding confidently into a bright musical future.
“Endlessly” is its sonic traveling companion – a B-side, if you will – and that runs on even more pacy yet still perfectly poised road-trip indie-rock grooves.
