After having seen them live a few times, I quickly concluded that I See Orange was one of the most exciting new bands of the last few years. “Doll Guts,” their latest single, has done nothing to change my opinion; on the contrary, it is the sound of a band building on their early successes and cementing an already impressive reputation.
Depending on your age, you will probably consider either incendiary post-punk vibes, gnarly grunge attitude, or the raw spark of early 21st-century indie-rock revivalism to be at the heart of their music. The truth is, they, and much more, are all found swirling around the band’s sonic heart; what you notice first says a lot more about you than it does them.
Being a slower, and indeed slow-burning, song, “Doll Guts” perhaps reflects their grungey inspirations more this time out, but they add some nice additional touches such as the skittering glockenspiel and a searing, pure rock ‘n’ roll guitar solo from Charlie and Cameron, respectively. It’s a blend of the big and the clever, the anthemic and the energised, the grand and the groovesome, not to mention the cute and the creepy, something that fits in perfectly with bassist and singer Giselle Medina’s penchant for the haunted doll image. (And I mean that in the most positive of ways.)
“Doll Guts” is the perfect next step for a band that has been steadily building a loyal following, an unmissable presence, and a solid reputation for delivering the goods both live and in the studio. And with their debut album lined up for later this year and their recent signing to JPU Records, that next step could be the biggest one they have taken so far.
