If pop music has, at least in more recent times, been seen as something obvious and insubstantial, low art and inelegant, then Jacob Barrett is here to put the record (ha!) straight. And with “Here I Go Again” being the second single from his forthcoming EP, there has never been a better time to get on board with his smart brand of music.
And although pop is the place where the song starts, it’s easy ways and ticking beats ticking all the right boxes, it then evolves through several sonic seamless and steady sonic increments, and travels more broadly than your average chart-ready pop piece. Perhaps, for those still interested in genres, it is better classed as alt-pop, indie-pop, orchestral-pop, smart pop, or pop 2.0.
The pop vibes are gradually joined by additional vocal tones and layered textures, pushing through indie soundscapes, dynamic shifts, ebbs and flows, with a trumpet weaving through before exploding into almost Mariarchi-marvellousness. The other side of which we find ourselves in denser, perhaps even rock-oriented waters.
It’s a clever journey, taking us from lulling lows to exciting highs, but “Here I Go Again” never once loses sight of its melodics and musicality. Even as it weaves the cleverest of designs through the pop-scape, it is nothing less than accessible, addictive, and thoroughly infectious!
