If Jacob Barrett’s previous single, ‘Here I Go Again,’ was a more beat-driven and groovesome affair, this time out, he has given us something whose pace and poise are dictated more by the vocals than the instrumentation, mainly because he sonic lines that act as the platform for the song could be described as ephemeral, ebbing and flowing between understated deftness and a state of ambient delicacy and, at times, almost absent altogether.
Guitars gently wash through, and latterly bass-end sonic pulses tether the song in reality, but for the most part it is Barrett’s gorgeous vocal textures and arrays that are the body of the song, especially as the song hits the later choruses, soaring, angelic, ethereal and gorgeous – tipping its hat, perhaps, to the vocal serenity of the likes of The Brothers Gibb and Art Garfunkel.
And in an age when such sonic, cinematic highs are largely the bastion of AI tools, this is, and indeed sounds like, the product of a grassroots musician making music in his bedroom – and I mean that in the most positive sense. Here is a song that is both otherworldly in its vibe and scope yet feels warm, honest, and, most importantly, human.
Gorgeous is a much-overused word in music reviews… especially by me, but with ‘Maybe,’ even such a heightened and hyperbolic word doesn’t seem adequate for what Jacob Barrett gives us.
