Jane N' The Jungle - Disco Lemonade (Angel Rock LLC)

23 February 2025

Echoing just the right balance of gutter-rock sleaze and the sheen of sophistication, “Disco Lemonade,” despite its seemingly flippant title, is a bit of a beast. Running on slow and grungey, claustrophobic energies and big alt-rock riffs, a slightly dark and delicious gothic-infused vibe, and a presence best described as a menacing glamour, it ticks many boxes.

This is Jane N’ The Jungle’s homage to the 90’s hit “Sex and Candy,” flipped through 180 degrees to see things from the female perspective; it is slow and sensuous, not to mention superb.

Not only a great song, one full of intricate, hard rock grooves and dirge-disco moves, a collision of glam and grunge, but a reminder that, despite what most rockers will tell you, it doesn’t have to always be about velocity and volume. “Disco Lemonade” may take its time, uncoiling slowly, threading its way toward the listener, building weight and momentum but eventually, its musical folds and sonic force hit you, and when it does, it does so with the impact of a medium sized tsunami!

This is rock music forged of poise and precision and purpose and poignancy, rather than the cheap shot, sucker punch that most music makers in the same field are content to put their name to.

It might be my first encounter with Jane N’ The Jungle, but it is safe to say that they have me hook, line, and sinker.
