Jay Luke - Tornado of Mistakes (self-released)

17 May 2025

In the right hands, music made at the heavier end of the musical spectrum can be lyrically eloquent. Similarly, poetic songs don’t have to be fey and folky. Powerful music can be poignant. What I’m saying is that music can be both big AND clever. “Tornado of Mistakes,” the latest one from Jay Luke, is a case in point.

With many of his musical reference points harking back to the golden age of classic heavy metal, the anthemic nature of Iron Maiden and the guitar lucidity of Wishbone Ash are particularly prominent, he makes a sound that sparkles with nostalgia and yet marches confidently through the modern musical landscape.

Like the best bands of that era, the music carries a message, one about the impact and effect of self-awareness and the benefits of self-reflection, something that seems in short supply in the social media age.

It’s turning into a busy year for Jay, with a plethora of live shows to carry him through, and for those with a taste for more hard rock and heavy metal inclined tastes, especially those who have a hankering for the halcyon days of the late seventies and early eighties, one spin of singles like “Tornado of Mistakes” are all it is going to take for you to be hunting down tickets to live shows in an instant.
