Sitting somewhere between Harry Nilsson’s world-weary wisdom, Randy Newman’s knowing wink and wit, and Tom Waits barroom philosophising, “Tryin’ To Get It Right” ticks a lot of boxes for those who like music that comes from a lived experience. It is fair to say that JD Hinton has been around the block a few times, and as a result, his music is forged from the stuff of life’s rich pageant. And I mean that in the most positive and constructive of ways.
As the song travels across its four-minute journey, it rises out of intimate, yet jaunty piano ballad origins, through a bluesy, barrelhouse groover, and finally, having added numerous layers, various sonic tones and musical textures, heads into anthemic realms, before returning to an understated bookend as a playout and sonic epilog.
But, like any great song, as well done as the music is, and it is, it is the lyrics that stand out. Relatable, confessional, and laced with experience, the song is both tender and full of heart and hope.
It is the sort of song that, no matter what path our life has taken, no matter how our various relationships have gone, there is something here that will resonate with everyone who hears it.
The unspoken reference for me here is this. Men may be from Mars, women from Venus, but here is someone saying, “hey, I know relationships can be hard, but I’m doing my best!” And what else can you ask of anyone?
