Jeff Vidov - New York, I'm Coming To You (Vidov Records)

29 April 2025

Some people write songs. Jeff Vidov writes anthems. I guess he thinks bigger than everyone else. His latest one, “New York, I’m Coming To You,” is the sound of his core pop/rock sound wandering through some lush, orchestral territory. As vibes go, it is big, sonically bountiful, joyous, and celebratory, sounding like the sort of song that plays out over the credits of a blockbuster, a feel-good film where the guy gets the girl, resolves the struggle, changes his life, wins big.

In the spirit of writing about what you know, the song is partly his recollections of studying music and being a session player in New York City and partly about thoughts of returning one day, something that, as yet, he hasn’t done. But, for now, he can live out that dream via this epic song.

It’s also good value for money. Not only the standard single and a trimmed-down radio edit, but a fantastic instrumental take too, and it is the latter that is really interesting. Why? The removal of the lyrics reveals just what a finely wrought and ornately crafted tune he has created here. You get to hear the sweep and soar of the strings, the punch of the brass and woodwind, and the additional chime of the bells, plus many more subtly sonics, all woven through more traditional rock and roll sounds.

A song with enormous appeal and a love letter to The Big Apple? Absolutely.
