Jeff Vidov makes music that takes the familiar and re-presents it as a fresh entity. He fashions a modern, of the here and now sound from sonic strands garnered from across the musical map, weaving together genre and geography, era and scene. He understands that, when it comes to established genres, the heavy lifting might already have been done, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t new places to explore, especially in those liminal spaces where genres and sounds and styles meet and merge.
His latest single, “Take a Ride,” is no exception to this astute and adventurous approach. Here, he masterfully blends a pop-rock sound with Latin guitar breaks, builds a soundscape of intertwinned sonics that wander from the seductively groovy to the artistically anthemic. And if there is a slightly nostalgic feel to the song, it is less that the spirit of the 80’s runs through it, more that he explores a sound that first came to light in that era and has never really gone out of fashion.
“Take a Ride,” is a big song, but rather than rely on volume and velocity to overwhelm the listener, while there is a lot going on here, “Take a Ride” remains dynamic and energetic, fiery and full of life. And in case that wasn’t enough, the single comes with two alternate versions: one that pushes even further into a sun-kissed, Latin vibe, the other stripped of lyrics so you can fully appreciate just how smart and ornate the music is.
