Every song is comprised of several elements: music and vocals, mood and vibe, groove and rhythm, but sometimes one of those stands out from the rest. That is certainly the case with Do It All Again, the new EP from Jennifer Marie.
Whilst the music woven through her songs is fantastic in its own right, supple and spacious blends of sophisticated soul and poised pop vibes, her voice is the most obvious focal point. It is both confident and warm, powerful yet understated when it needs to be, gorgeously sensual and wonderfully accessible.
If the title track is a rousing piece of neo-soul, a song that rises and falls with mood and emotion as her voice ebbs and flows between anthemic highs and understated lows, “I’m Released” shows that she is just as impressive when she plays a more straightforward pop card too.
“You Got a Hold On Me” is a deft R&B piece. “Take Me Back” bridges soul-pop and folk, and “How Do I Get There” plays the EP out with a cooly, calm and imporing ballad.
If you are looking for something from the singer-songwriter realm that is much more than another kid with a wide-brimmed hat just bashing out A minor on an acoustic guitar, this is for you. The music is cleverly woven, emotion oozes from every sonic pore and boy, what a voice!
