Jennifer Silva - Rearview Mirror (self-released)

Talking Heads were on one to nowhere. Ray Charles famously told Jack to hit it. The Beatles encountered a long and winding one. And Elton John said goodbye to his yellow brick variety. Roads! They are everywhere you look. But in the case of Jennifer Silva, there is only one place that she needs to look to find hers: the “Rearview Mirror.”

As she heads out into a new future, she puts the old road behind her, in this case, her old life in New York City which she is exchanging for one in more rural surroundings upstate. As she poignantly and pointedly remarks, now, she only looks in her rearview mirror to put her lipstick on, never to dwell on what has already passed.

She weaves alt-country finesse around rock-driven grooves to create a relatable celebration filled with hope, optimism, adventure, and heading out into the unknown. As the music lilts and rolls, like the rhythms and sounds of the road itself, it too lulls us, the listener, into a feeling of carefree change, that a road may be similarly calling us and that somehow it might be echoing in this song.

Never have I wanted to throw a bag of clothes and bare essentials, a guitar, and a book of poetry into the back seat of a car and head off over the hill more than after listening to “Rearview Mirror.” Hey, why not? What’s the worst that could happen?
