That’s an interesting take on things. All too often, rock and dance music are worlds apart, and songs extolling the virtues of the clubland scene are generally found in the dance music realm, whilst rock and roll is more driven to promote its own sonic merits. So, to find a song that is unashamedly rock celebrating the joys of dancing is a glorious thing to behold.
Just as “Night Dancers” talks about night clubs and dancefloor denizens the world over, the coming together of such a community, the sheer seduction and sensuality, the explosive release of energy, the sense of liberty and, if only temporarily, abandonment of responsibility, of a such an experience, so Jesse Kinch delivers the song via well-established groovesome rock and roll sounds. How refreshing and what a remarkable cross-pollination of worlds.
And whilst his song is forged of rock riffs and hard beats, the ebb and flow of Hammond organs, and his granite voice, it remains funky and fluid, a gritty salvo but full of much more groove than the next ten rock songs put together.
It’s almost as if he is saying that genres aren’t necessary and all types of music, if done right, can be dance music anyway. And I get the feeling that if you slipped “Night Dancers” into the middle of a set at a hipster Ibiza nightclub in the middle of the summer, those busting out their moves would just carry on carrying on…only more so! A groove is a groove is a groove!
