Opening with the contagious and creative “Head First,” this latest EP from the young Philadelphian proves why she has rapidly caught the attention of the discerning gig goers and music aficionados of that scene. Mixing pop charm with indie smarts, instant accessibility, and unbelievable infectiousness, this opening salvo is not only a great way to start, but it fulfils its function perfectly – it makes you want to dive in and find out more.
“Fiction” follows, a more jazz-infused pop groove and a marvelous showcase for her crystaline voice, soaring and serene as soulful guitar licks and spacious pop grooves coalesce around her. “One Way Mirror” heads into a more driven, more earnest, indie-rock realm. Lead single,“Rewind,” has a lovely island vibe, something warm and welcoming about it, sun-kissed and sassy, and “In Time” again frames her gorgeous voice perfectly, this time with classical strings and cascades of acoustic guitar.
It isn’t hard to see why the name Jill Baldassari is on many people’s lips.
