Joan As Police Woman gives “We Don’t Own It” so much room to breathe that the silence around the guitar starts to feel like part of the song. Twenty years after Real Life, Joan Wasser returns to it with an openness that makes the performance feel almost painfully close. Her electric guitar never fights for space, and neither does her voice. Everything is allowed to arrive gently, which somehow makes it hit harder.
The vocals are especially beautiful. Jeremy Gustin and Will Graefe meet Wasser so naturally that the harmonies feel less like backing vocals and more like people quietly staying with her. Their voices never crowd the guitar or push the emotion somewhere it does not already want to go. Wasser can sound completely alone and completely accompanied at the same time, and that tension sits at the heart of the performance.
Wasser originally wrote “We Don’t Own It” after the death of Elliott Smith, carrying with her what she had already learned through losing her fiancé and collaborator Jeff Buckley. She has spoken about the way grief makes people search desperately for answers that death cannot give them. Twenty years later, the song feels like it has spent that time living with the question rather than solving it.
It reminds me of sitting somewhere just outside of town after a hell of a day, waiting for a bus that has not arrived yet while the sun goes down across an almost empty landscape. You are too tired to keep fighting whatever the day has done to you, and for a few minutes the stillness becomes beautiful. Nothing has changed. The light just falls differently across it.
That feeling comes through the way the three musicians leave room for one another. Graefe’s acoustic guitar sits beside Wasser’s electric rather than underneath it, while Gustin gives the song enough movement to keep it from sinking under its own weight. The voices move in and out together, sometimes barely seeming separate at all. There is sadness everywhere in the performance, but there is warmth too, and neither one cancels the other out.
That is what makes this version feel so affecting. It does not sound like a song being preserved for an anniversary. It sounds lived in by someone who knows it differently now. Real Life Evolution gives Wasser the chance to return to music written twenty years ago with different musicians and a different life behind her, and “We Don’t Own It” carries that distance beautifully.
The session was recorded live at The Owl Music Parlor in Brooklyn, filmed by Ehud Lazin, with audio recorded by Adam Sachs. Real Life Evolution was mixed by Patrick Dillett at Reservoir Studios and mastered by Chris Gehringer at Sterling Sound.
“We Don’t Own It” is out now via Reveal Records on Real Life Evolution.
Joan As Police Woman is also taking Real Life on the road for its 20th anniversary, with dates continuing through Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand into May 2027.
