Rock music may have made a name for itself for often being raw, rebellious, and riotous, but there are many sides to this broad genre, and Jodi DiPiazza certainly comes from a more rarefied and refined side of the tracks. Those low-slung, self-taught, barre-chord-wielding guitarists that make all the noise might grab the headlines, but if you want deft composition, gorgeous vocals (not to mention perfect diction, which makes a welcome change) and exquisite musicianship, ‘Another Anyone’ is for you.
It comes as no surprise to find that DiPiazza is classically trained (in vocals, piano, and composition), something that becomes obvious in the chiming and charming piano lines, the crystal vocal tones, and the dynamic ebb and flow of the song, and as it moves along, ‘Another Anyone’ takes in everything from chart-infectious pop, anthemic rock, neo-classical undercurrents, and a very accessible AOR vibe.
And if you are looking for reference points, the one that keeps popping up in my head is *Carole King,*- that same sense of refined rock and roll, mainstream accessibility, storytelling, and open-hearted honesty – and that isn’t a bad touchstone for any musician.
‘Another Anyone’ feels like a song unearthed from the Great American Songbook, and that rare sense of longevity and familiarity, whilst feeling fresh and new, is a combination that any artist would be happy with.
