Julian Peterson - Since I Left You (self-released)

16 December 2025

“Regrets, I’ve had a few.” So sang Ole Blues Eyes…that’s Mr Sinatra to you. Well, Julian Peterson’s latest single is all about regret, that and the slow process of moving on and rebuilding yourself in the wake of a difficult break-up.

Because we always see ourselves as the hero in our own story, it is hard to see the once object of our desires getting on okay without us, able to move on so easily, while we are barely holding it together. That’s not how the story was meant to go. But it is a story as old as love itself.

Rather than setting such a love-lorn tale to tear-stained, melancholy melodies, his musical vehicle for this is a lushly woven blend of acoustica, a folk-pop sound elevated towards a more rock-infused place by understated beats and chiming guitar motifs, sweeping steel pedal siren sounds, and rich harmonies, a neat contrast to the emotional turmoil its lyrics deliver.

Whereas most break-up songs are full of self-pity, this is more philosophical. Where they are often brooding and bitter, this is more mature, even if the pain is palpable. This is a song written by someone who knows how life, love, and longing work, at least in the real world.

And the best bit of the whole sad story: eventually, the romantic winds changed direction, and reader, he married her! The moral, I guess, is never give up hope.
