KaiserKillers - Heavenly in Black (KryogenyK)

10 April 2025

Just from the band’s name alone, there is much to unpack. My first thought was that the band was referencing two of the more successful indie-rock bands of recent times – The Killers and Kaiser Chiefs, and their music certainly fits into that same “muscle meets melody” sonic sweet spot. But, it is actually a nod to The Kaiser Keller, the Hamburg basement that was the location for a then-unknown Beatles early shows.

In reality, as borne out by the latest single, “Heavenly in Black,” KaiserKillers have a unique sound, part modish infectiousness, part rock and roll solidity, and part fascinating slices of *Stranglers-infused keyboards cutting through. And despite this strange and heady mix, or perhaps because of it, “Heavenly in Black” is a beast of a song, one that takes the best of the pop world’s ear for melody and pushes it through an indie filter whilst underpinning it with just enough rock weight to keep things punchy.

Perhaps I should avoid trying too hard to analyze precisely what is happening here and slap a big label on them that says, “This is power-pop!” For power-pop it is! and great power-pop at that!

As for the subject matter, it’s an ode to the fact that some girls look great wearing black. Again, a simple and undeniable truth.
