We live in a time when people are looking for something to believe in, perhaps more than ever. We also live at a time when so many people —from faith leaders to politicians, celebrities to internet experts —are telling you that they have the answer, that it seems almost impossible to know who to place your trust in, whose motives seem genuine and who are the False Prophets. And that is the theme behind Kaneb Andrews’s latest EP.
And if opener, “Two-Wheeled Death Machine” acts as a metaphor for doing what makes you happy, in this case a bike, an open road and nothing to lose, a shimmering slice of americana-vibed rock and roll, “I Don’t Wanna Talk To God” takes a softer, more considered, acoustic route, one through unrequited love and supressed desire for, perhaps, the unobtainable.
“Midnight Medicine” is one of those songs that gets under your skin —for all the right reasons —a mid-paced country rocker that is both addictive and groovesome, sax-soaked and seductively sassy. “Recombination” is a gentle, soul-searching musing, one that questions whether we can really change who we are and the title track plays us out, sitting somewhere between the sonic spectrum set up by earlier songs and revels in the understanding that perhaps it is other people, at least that certain special other, that are our salvation, the thing worthy of becoming our lifes focal point.
I love that this collection of songs muses on some of the biggest questions we are ever faced with—faith, belief, understanding, and who or what we should put our trust in—but doesn’t do so at the expense of a great groove and some well-wrought, accessible, and extraordinary songwriting.
Come for the groove, stay for the philosophical ruminations!
